The Texas Observer is screening “Sleep Dealer,” a Sundance award-winning Mexican sci-fi movie described as “NAFTA meets Blade Runner.” In the near future the U.S.-Mexico border is sealed but connected by a network. In high-tech factories at night, cyber-laborers in Mexico connect their nervous systems to the network to operate robots that do menial work in the United States. Meanwhile, in impoverished towns in Mexico, corporations control the only sources of drinking water, guarded by weaponized drones. The New York Times called the film “exuberantly entertaining–a dystopian fable of globalization disguised as a science-fiction adventure.”
Bring a blanket; the Observer will bring the fancy popsicles.
