The Austin chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace will host a talk by Israeli anthropologist and author Smadar Lavie. Professor Lavie will discuss the political circumstance of the Mizrahi Jewish population in Israel, the recent Israeli elections, and Operation Protective Edge — the 2014 assault on Gaza.

Smadar Lavie received her doctorate in Anthropology from the University of California at Berkeley. She specializes in the anthropology of Egypt, Israel, and Palestine, with emphasis on issues of race, gender, and religion. Her most recent book is Wrapped in the Flag of Israel: Mizrahi Single Mothers and Bureaucratic Torture (Berghahn Books, 2014).
