The City of Austin is considering a fast-track permit process, and the City Council will vote on including worker protections. That would mean developers who want to use fast-track permitting would have to live up to Better Builder standards for workers—living wage, workers compensation, basic OSHA safety training, local hiring goals, and onsite monitoring to ensure that these standards are met.

The Workers Defense Project—a membership-based organization that empowers low-income workers to achieve fair employment through education, direct services, organizing and strategic partnerships—is asking supporters to gather for a “Rally for Workers Rights” to support this proposal. More information is on Facebook.
