Anti-war activist and educator Howard Machtinger will speak about the legacy of the Vietnam War. Machtinger’s first encounter with “the other side” of the war came in the fall of 1967, when he met with representatives of the National Liberation Front (NLF) of South Vietnam in Montreal. As a representative of Students for a Democratic Society, he later attended the second session of the Bertrand Russell International War Crimes Tribunal in Copenhagen.
Machtinger made the first of many visits to Vietnam in 2002 and continues to make connections between Vietnam and the U.S., most recently working on an anthology of Vietnamese writings from the Hanoi-based journal, Vietnamese Studies.
