Legendary Detroit author/activist Grace Lee Boggs will speak and answer questions via Skype about her book The Next American Revolution: Sustainable Activism for the Twenty-First Century.
The event, organized by the Beyond Capitalism Book Club, will begin with Boggs talking about the book and her ideas for visionary organizing , followed by Q&A.
A daughter of Chinese immigrants, Boggs received her B.A. from Barnard College and her Ph.D. in philosophy from Bryn Mawr College in 1940. She developed a 20-year political relationship with the black Marxist C.L.R. James, followed by extensive civil rights and Black Power Movement activism in Detroit in partnership with husband, James Boggs, who died in 1993.
The event is open to anyone, but participants are encouraged to read the book before the event. Copies are available at MonkeyWrench Books, on sale for $17 for those planning to attend the discussion. Also of interest will be articles and commentaries by Detroit thinkers and activists in The Detroit Reader.
