This panel discussion brings together African-American, Latinx, Muslim-identifying/presenting, non-Muslim South Asian, and Jewish individuals to confront stereotypes falsely associated with these communities; to dissect biased media coverage; and to acknowledge and understand the growing fear of vengeful collective responsibility (when an individual commits an act and others from a seemingly similar background are harassed or harmed through direct or indirect retaliation). Organizers hope to help further race-consciousness within the Austin activist community and increase solidarity across racial/ethnic lines.
Panelists will include representatives from the Austin Justice Coalition, CAIR, NAACP, Counter Balance, Grassroots Leadership, Southwestern University, University of Texas, Texas Impact, AZAAD, IfNotNow and more. Sponsors include the Austin chapter of the Council American-Islamic Relations.
