Grassroots Leadership is hosting an evening of dancing to benefit the Hutto Visitation Program. The event will honor Insis (Maribel) Bernardez for her leadership in launching the women’s hunger strike inside Hutto to challenge the unjust detention system, and Professor Barbara Hines for her work to affirm the dignity and rights of the immigrant community.
The visitation program pairs volunteers with asylum-seeking women detained at the T. Don Hutto detention center in Taylor, TX, to break the isolation of detention for the women, monitor human rights conditions in the facility, and to build advocates for closing down detention.
Tickets are $10 with appetizers and music DJ ENS and Son de Rey blending cumbia, Latin beats and pop electronica. Silent auction items available and a cash bar. More information online.
