A vigil will be held for José Wilfredo Lainez, a construction worker who died of heat exhaustion on June 15 while working on Highway 183. According to his family, the 54-year-old was in very good heath, but adequate water and rest breaks were not provided at the job site.
As a result of the efforts of the Workers Defense Project, the Austin City Council two years ago passed a law that requires companies to provide construction workers with rest breaks. Because Lainez was working on a state site, the rest break ordinance did not apply.
The vigil will be held in the parking lot across from the construction site where Lainez died.
