On the 31st anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster, AID Austin will screen “Bhopal: A Prayer for Rain,” which tells the story of the disaster through the eyes of a rickshaw puller, a journalist, and the chief executive of one of the world’s largest corporations. Directed by Ravi Kumar, the film stars Martin Sheen, Kal Penn, Mischa Barton, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Rajpal Yadav.

The catastrophic leak at the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, was the deadliest industrial disaster in history. After 31 years and more than 20,000 deaths, the abandoned factory site remains heavily contaminated and Bhopal’s groundwater remains laced with toxins. Hundreds of thousands of people, including children born to parents who survived the disaster, suffer from exposure-related illnesses.

Association for India’s Development is a volunteer-run organization committed to furthering sustainable, equitable and just development in India.
