Brad Tyer’s new book “Opportunity, Montana” explores how copper mining devastated a river, and twice destroyed a town called Opportunity. Tyer—a Houston native now living in Austin, where he is managing editor of the Texas Observer—moved to Montana for a change of scenery after a divorce. Interlaced through Tyer’s expose is the personal story of his troubled relationship with the father he had estranged himself from, a recently deceased wastewater engineer whose disappointment in his son left a terrible legacy all its own.
