Orrin Shindell, a PhD candidate in physics at the University of Texas physics, will speak on “Education Reform as Class Warfare.”
In response to the fear of losing its dominant position in the global economy and to the threat posed by the social movements of the 1960s and ’70s, U.S. business and government leaders saw education policy as a means of privileging the economic interests of U.S. industry while diminishing the political role the public plays in determining how schools operate. One consequence of this process is public schools that treat children as units of production rather than focusing on the full development of the human personality and the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.
