Progressive (Gary Dorrien) and conservative (Richard Land) theologians will debate the role of government in the contemporary United States.

Dorrien,  an Episcopal priest and professor at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University, is a frequent speaker and commentator on programs such as “Bill Moyers’ Journal.”  Described by Cornel West as “the preeminent social ethicist in North America today,” he is the author of 14 books, including Economy, Difference, Empire: Social Ethics for Social Justice.

Land is president of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. A former professor of theology and church history at Criswell College, Land was named one of the 25 most influential evangelicals in America by Time Magazine. His latest book is The Divided States of America? What Liberals and Conservatives Get Wrong About Faith and Politics.

The event is organized by University Christian Church and co-sponsored by a number of local churches. More information is online. Childcare will be provided through the third grade.
